ISLAMABAD: Taking a suo-motu notice on an application about the sale of alleged substandard hepatitis vaccine in the country, Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday directed the issuance of notices to the federal and the Punjab health secretaries and the owners of a Lahore-based pharmaceutical company.
The application was filed by Hamayun Khan Shaheed of Faisalabad, seeking action against the company for what he called a deliberate spreading of the hepatitis B virus in the country through the sale of ‘substandard vaccine’.
The applicant claimed that the after an approval by the Health Ministry, a substandard Chinese vaccine was being sold in the country, which was not certified by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The applicant further alleged that the vaccine was spreading cancer, as it carried the CHO Cell, which has been declared harmful for humans by several international scientific research bodies.
